CASE STUDY
The Kyeamba Gap West Rest Area marks the approximate halfway point between Sydney and Melbourne on the Hume Highway (M31). It is a popular rest area shared by heavy and light vehicles, however, the rest area exits onto a blind corner.
Exiting vehicles are not seen by oncoming traffic. This is particularly hazardous when a heavy vehicle is exiting since it takes much longer to accelerate.
Our solution was to develop an autonomous system that
simultaneously detects a truck exiting the rest area and warns oncoming highway traffic to slow down. This was achieved by configuring a traffic radar (Taipan) to detect heavy vehicles and subsequent integration with a custom Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) via J1’s custom wireless link solution.
The project's outcome is increased road safety due to the advanced warning system for motorists, enabling them to slow down when heavy vehicles enter the highway.
